Autism Rates Continue to Rise - Let's Do More than Research
About 1 in every 31 children was diagnosed with autism by age 8 in 2022, up from 1 in 36 in 2020, according to the CDC report that published Tuesday. Rates varied widely by gender, race and geographic area.

Today the CDC published new autism incidence rates. From CNN.com:
US autism rate continues to rise, CDC says, pointing to greater awareness and better screening
About 1 in every 31 children was diagnosed with autism by age 8 in 2022, up from 1 in 36 in 2020, according to the CDC report that published Tuesday. Rates varied widely by gender, race and geographic area.
One of my complaints about the major autism advocacy groups is that they focus almost exclusively on raising funds for research rather than supporting those living with autism.
Research is certainly needed with data suggesting 60-80% of autism has genetic components. But treatment is still based on understanding how autism and its spectrum of behaviors presents in the real world. Behavioral research, support programs, and funding for community integration are imperative in mapping how people with autism can thrive and contribute to society.
Those of us who have children with autism know that everyone is different. Medications and supplements work for some and not for others. Behavioral therapies click with one person, but the next five have zero effect. Cracking the code on what works clinically and behaviorally for as many people as possible should also be a major advocacy talking point. In my opinion, it isn’t.
In the article shared above, there are quotes from leading “experts” in advocacy organizations including Autism Speaks, Autism Society, and more. The author attempts to balance the “funding for research” bullhorn with the call-to-action to support people living with ASD today..
I have two children on the autism spectrum. My son, who is more severe, has measurably improved by more than 40% over the years. My daughter who is high functioning has improved as well, achieving an ATEC score that is almost neurotypical–a score that would mean “recovery” in her case.
These results are no accident. We have developed and deployed a clear method to achieve results that many in the medical circle have said were impossible. Care3 was built as a company to help people to achieve extraordinary outcomes–what some call miracles.
If you, or someone you know, is dealing with a loved one with autism and wants to learn more, contact me. I’d be happy to share our method and how following this path led to extraordinary outcomes for my children.
Meet Olaf: A Custom Metric Makes the Miracle
Olaf’s Miracle: We helped Olaf’s family reduce his lunchtime caloric intake by 24% resulting in weight loss and lower blood pressure goals met in only six months.
Meet Olaf (name changed for privacy). He is a 25 year old man with autism living at home with his parents. They joined Care3 as Premium Members to work on specific behaviors that Olaf exhibited, but needed to change.
The key behavior change was helping to manage Olaf’s caloric intake by understanding how much of his meals were eaten by percentage. To accomplish this, we created a custom metric “% Meal Plate Eaten” for Olaf’s parents to log and view trends.
And did that plan ever work. Olaf had been consuming too many calories and putting on significant weight. This weight gain also led to higher blood pressure. Working with Care3 led to multiple miracles for Olaf, but we feature one here.
Olaf’s Miracle: We helped Olaf’s family reduce his lunchtime caloric intake by 24% resulting in weight loss and lower blood pressure goals met in only six months. Now Olaf’s family can manage his intake for better lifelong behaviors and caloric consumption. What was once out of control now is under control and will lead to a healthier life for Olaf.
Olaf’s miracle wasn’t magic. It was made.

Meet June & Aaron: There Are No Small Miracles
Most people say something like, “good things happen when you least expect it.” And for the most part we agree. However, in our experience, this is also true:
Unexpected outcomes happen when you plan for it.
Most people say something like, “good things happen when you least expect it.” And for the most part we agree. However, in our experience, this is also true:
Unexpected outcomes happen when you plan for it.
In the course of the daily routine, something changes that drives a different result. In this miracle story, June and her son Aaron reduced urgent care visits by measuring a few key metrics and trying to change them. There are no small miracles when they happen to you and your loved one.
Client: Special Needs Child
Conditions: Autism, Blind, Cerebral Palsy
Payer: Medicaid (Medi-Cal)
Domicile: Home with Mother and team of four caregivers
Care3 Coach works with mother of 10-year old son to create Personalized Action Plan (PAP)
Aaron’s Miracle #1: Coordinated Aaron’s care between five caregivers and June to optimize efficiency and effectiveness. Higher quality and frequency of care reduced urgent care visits by 33% year over year. #MakeYourMiracle
Aaron’s Miracle #2: We were able to optimize Aaron’s daily fluid intake to reduce bedwetting by 90%.
Savings to the healthcare system: $6,000/year
How We Did It: We worked with June and her five caregivers over time to optimize Aaron’s Personalized Action Plan. Over six months, we found the right mix of tasks, metrics, and the best use of text messaging. We achieved 100% PAP adherence.

Senior Care: Miracles Happen When You're Doing the Right Things
We have developed a method of caregiving that delivers results. Some describe what we deliver as miracles. Look at the results we were able to achieve with one of our partners.
Has this ever happened to you? In the course of doing your routine activities, you discover you’ve invented something new!
As we delivered our base service assisting one of our partners care for AAPI seniors, we realized that we were helping the seniors and their family caregivers learn how to use technology for care.
We were expanding the definition of health literacy to digital health literacy and health data literacy. No one has ever done this before and it has become our leading differentiator.
We have developed a method of caregiving that delivers results. Some describe what we deliver as miracles. Look at the results we were able to achieve with one of our partners. Significant reductions in hospitalizations at 30 and 90 days.
These results held for more than 2.5 years and helped more than 90 seniors stay out of the hospital by learning self-care methods and using basic technology for improved health. That’s right, seniors are quite able to use mobile apps for health!
And that wasn’t the only astounding result.
We were also able to deliver significant increases in health literacy, including understanding the condition, the information about the condition, and the numbers they need to know to best manage themselves (with their families assistance and not) in the home.
These results are not accidental. They are manufactured. They are replicable.
As a Care3 Member, you already have the opportunity to work with us to help your family members dealing with chronic conditions achieve results many will say are impossible.
Contact us to learn more. We look forward to working with you!
Senior Care Miracles: Discoveries Reduce Falls
These results are not normal. If you ask the families that worked with us, they called some results “miracles.”
When we started Care3 the company saw the opportunity for seniors to age in place with dignity and grace. The need for care coordination was clear because the disparities in outcomes for underserved groups showed how the #healthcare system was picking winners and losers.
That had to change.
Care3 was able to show real outcome improvement for seniors of color while also driving adult family caregivers to make more informed decisions in the home for their senior parents. Action plan adherence by families improved more than 68%. Interactions between families and doctors via text became the norm rather than phone tag or non-returned calls. More than once we received feedback from families that these results were miracles.
Providers received data to make better treatment decisions, altering care plans twice per quarter (!) rather than twice per year as was the norm. Falls were reduced by 5%. Emergency visits and hospitalizations reduced 9% each month.
With Care3, there were only winners.
AND working with us was cost-effective with a 1.7x ROI for our partner. We are proud of the work we have done and continue to do in senior care for families of color.
These results are not normal. If you ask the families that worked with us, they called some results “miracles.”
We can show you how to make your own miracles. Contact us to schedule a brief 15 minute demo. It can change the life of your loved one, and yours.

Do You Care?
This post might get you a little bit in your feelings, but we have to answer this foundational fundamental question. That moment when you learn that you or someone you love has a chronic condition, it defines a new stage of your life. Managing health becomes a lifestyle. Behaviors need to change in order for you (or your loved one) to live your best.
by David S. Williams III, Founder & CEO, Care3
In this post you will learn:
The 3 Actions of Caring (“Care3”)
Why it’s important to be persistent with healthy behaviors
The financial and wealth-generating advantages of adopting healthy behaviors
Do you care?
This post might get you a little bit in your feelings, but we have to answer this foundational fundamental question. That moment when you learn that you or someone you love has a chronic condition, it defines a new stage of your life. Managing health becomes a lifestyle. Behaviors need to change in order for you (or your loved one) to live your best.
Let’s be clear. Caring is not about feelings. You can feel sorry for yourself or someone you love who has a condition. You can feel angry, resentful—but then do nothing to improve the situation. Caring is making changes to achieve an outcome. Caring is about action.
Do you care enough to make those changes?
What are those changes?
Attitude. You have to get out of fantasy and into focus.
Lifestyle. You have to change your lifestyle. You have to go from behaviors that are harmful to those that are helpful.
Persistence. You cannot revert to unhealthy behaviors. You have to repeat behaviors that are helpful in this new lifestyle.
Attitude, lifestyle and persistence.
To answer this question, do you care—the only way the answer is “yes” is if you take action to make life better given your situation.
Let's talk about the 3 Actions of Caring. You answered “yes” to the question, do you care? You're willing to take action in your care journey. You have to take on the behaviors that lead to living your best. We call these behaviors the 3 Actions of Caring.
Adjust Your Attitude. Fall away from fantasies. Focus on the new reality. Focus on what will work best and set your attitude to receive all of the benefits that will come your way. When you adjust your attitude, think about abundance, think about all of the things that are going to be going well for you even with these health challenges. Think about if you make these changes in yourself, in your attitude, how much easier and less stressful your life will be.
You want to fall away from fantasies. What does that mean? The fantasy is that I'm not going to do anything and my condition will go away. You see a lot of people do this. They get diagnosed with a condition that requires some lifestyle changes . But they think, “you know what? That's not going to be me. I'm going to be fine.”
That's a fantasy. When you live in those fantasies, your health spirals downward, your quality of life declines. We want to take our attitude into focus.
Live the Lifestyle. Don't do harmful, do helpful. Understand what is needed to get the best results and embrace them. Find the positives in the new routine. Don't do harmful, do helpful. We all know somebody who has diabetes and when people are told that they have diabetes, they realize they have to change their lifestyle. There are certain foods you just shouldn't eat anymore. You need to exercise a little bit more. Embrace this lifestyle!
But if people don't do number one, which is adjust your attitude and they live in fantasy land. They think the negative outcomes that can occur won't happen to them. “Those things won't happen to me. I won't lose a limb. I won’t go blind.” I can tell you it happens all the time. It's happened in my family and the reason why is those people did not live the lifestyle. They did not embrace what really is a positive lifestyle change. Exercising and eating right are positive behaviors we all can do.
You have to find replacements for that pleasure, right? That's living the lifestyle. That's embracing the new. If you don't, then you're doing harmful, not helpful.
So number one, adjust your attitude. Number two, live the lifestyle. What's number three? This is something you probably have never heard before.
3. Pay for Persistence. What does that mean? Here's the reality. And in our diabetes example, this is 100% true. It's hard not to revert to known behaviors to your previous lifestyle. You should pay for the support that makes you persistent. That's worth paying for. Why?
There is an extra financial burden that will befall you if you do not embrace the lifestyle. More visits to the doctor, more visits to the hospital, more dollars spent to try to maintain quality of life. Pay for persistence because the more persistent you are with living the lifestyle, the better the health outcomes will be. The better your health, the less you pay for extra healthcare to maintain.
There is an economic advantage to living the lifestyle. It's cheaper! Pay for things that will help you be persistent. Saving the money you would have spent on healthcare will build generational wealth. It's in your life interest and your financial interest. To repeat the most beneficial behaviors, pay for persistence.
If you have embraced the 3 Actions of Caring, you've adjusted your attitude, you live the lifestyle and you pay for persistence. Now, maybe you've read this post and say, that's already me. I'm already doing those things. Great. Good for you. Share this post with someone else because maybe they need this. And for yourself, use it as a reminder and a motivator to continue the behaviors because sometimes we falter.
Take care!
